The exhibition of Estonian illustrators ‘Fox Spirit. The Fox’s Charm’ has arrived at Vargamäe. From 1 December, the walls of the cattle barn at the Vargamäe Museum are adorned with the exhibition of Estonian illustrators ‘Fox Spirit. The Fox’s Charm’. Through the works on display, recognised Estonian artists interpret the theme of the fox spirit. The illustrations have also been shown in the international exhibition of the same name, ‘Fox Spirit. Fox Charm’. In China and Japan, there is hardly anyone who knows nothing about fox spirits. This spiritual being is as inseparable a part of those cultures as fairies are of European culture. ‘In Europe, however, the fox spirit is still a rather unfamiliar phenomenon and belongs more to the world of educated people. It must under no circumstances be equated with our werewolf. Our exhibition tries to show how people outside the Eastern cultural sphere see, understand, and feel this divine being, how it appears through Western eyes. Every artist already sees all the phenomena of the world a little differently, and here cultural difference also comes into play. Perhaps Chinese and Japanese viewers would look at these pictures with a smile, but we hope it is a benevolent one,’ said curator Viive Noor. The exhibition is open at the Tammsaare Museum at Vargamäe from 1 December until 18 February.
