Tammsaare Museum in Vargamäe (Thief’s Hill) is situated in the birth home of Anton Hansen Tammsaare, one of the most famous Estonian writers. It was in late 19th century that the author’s parents Ann and Peeter Hansen found their way here in the midst of swamps and bogs. Harsh living conditions, untamed nature, and a spiteful neighbor put the fortitude and strength of will of the Tammsaare folks to the test. Experience from the birth farm underlies Tammsaare’s most renowned novel Truth and Justice (Tõde ja õigus in Estonian) which touches upon the lives and goings-on, interpersonal relations, and the never-ending battle with the earth and soil of our Estonian ancestors. Vargamäe exhibits the scene of action of the famous novel and a typical domicile of an Estonia farming family, surrounded by pure nature.
