This summer, in the anniversary year of “Truth and Justice”, an engaging production will arrive at the Tammsaare Museum in Vargamäe, opening the story of Vargamäe from a new angle. Nuutrum Theatre will visit with the performance “The Guardian of Vargamäe”. Premiere: 24.07.2026 at the A. H. Tammsaare Museum in Vargamäe. Author: Urmas Lennuk of Rakvere Theatre. Director: Vallo Kirs of Ugala. Artist: Annika Lindemann. Lighting designer: Sander Aleks Paavo. Sound and lighting: Margus Ruhno. Technician: Andrus Kivila. Stage manager: Inge Kaseleht. Assistant director: Chris-Marlen Kuningas. Cast: Ülle Lichtfeldt of Rakvere Theatre, Jane Napp, Märten Matsu of Rakvere Theatre and Rait Õunapuu of Ugala. Sauna Madis has died and his wife takes over keeping watch at Vargamäe. But women have never been loved at Vargamäe. Thus the frail Sauna Woman finds herself reconciling Juss and Mari, the eternal farmhand Matu, Oru Joosep and the daughter Liisu, whom her father drives from home in madness. In addition to bringing peace to Vargamäe, the poor Sauna Woman also has to deal with Madis’s funeral. “The Guardian of Vargamäe” looks at life in Vargamäe from the perspective of the sauna folk. From the sauna, the battles of Vargamäe’s mighty people do not always look especially dignified or powerful. The truth and justice reflected by Tammsaare often look, from the sauna side, rather thin and boastful, like a Seto old woman’s struggle with a pea rolling around in her toothless mouth. Still, the ditches are dug, Madis is sent on his heavenly way, and Vargamäe is guarded, because no matter what Tammsaare may write, the sauna folk of Vargamäe survive all the trials of the evil world. Once even after the cruellest winter, summer always comes, and Estonians gather at Vargamäe to laugh and cry over Vargamäe’s mighty people. The performance has two acts and lasts about 2.5 hours. Start times are 19.00, on Sundays 16.00. Entrance to the hall is 15 minutes before the performance starts. Group bookings from 20 people: paula@nuutrum.ee, tel. 5 58808034. Event website: nuutrum.ee.
