Exhibition: The Truth of Death and the Right to Life

‘He took his father up from the ground again and started walking, and now he no longer turned back. But suddenly he felt that carrying his father was much heavier in death than in life. The dead are heavier than the living in general, thought Indrek.’ ‘Truth and Justice’ V. The museum’s annual exhibition opens up the human side of death in the world of ‘Truth and Justice’: what matters to those left behind, what one thinks about at the end of life, what kind of life has preceded death, and what follows after it. Visitors get an overview of disappearing customs and of Tammsaare’s own last day and final hour. The exhibition helps us understand that death is a natural part of life and opens the inner world of the characters in ‘Truth and Justice’. It also shows how death inspired Tammsaare and how attitudes toward death have changed over time. For example, while today it would be inappropriate to ask who will die next, in earlier times a whole set of predictions was connected with it. The exhibition is enriched by facts from real life. In addition to the exhibition, the museum will open up the theme throughout the year. Two heritage hikes will take place: the April hike leads participants to Järva-Madise cemetery, where Tammsaare’s parents are buried, and in August we will follow the trails of vanished farmsteads. Watch and listen: on Tammsaare Remembrance Day, 1 March, Marju Kõivupuu’s lecture on death and funerals was recorded.
