Come to listen and watch and, if you wish, join in yourself; guidance will be given on site. The instructors are Kaja Kraav and Kersti Liivak, who have led dance sessions in this area for several years and through them introduced local tradition. 30 September at 12:00, ‘From Tammsaare-Põhja Farm to the Vargamäe Museum – Construction and Restoration Work’. Museum curator Siiri Kvell introduces the construction and restoration of the birthplace of writer Anton Hansen Tammsaare. We will compare the Hansen family’s threshing-house dwelling restored to the late 19th century with the residence of the family heir, built at the beginning of the 20th century. Among other stories, visitors will learn how Soviet-era floor heating functioned in the threshing house, why bread cannot be baked in the present threshing-room oven, and why the insulation in the heir’s residence was inadequate. After the publication of the novel ‘Truth and Justice’ in 1926, Tammsaare-Põhja farm and Vetepere village immediately became famous. Readers identified Tammsaare’s birthplace with the literary Vargamäe and wanted to see where the farms Mäe and Oru were. This continuing interest led to the creation of a museum on the farm. 28 September to 1 October, display on the restoration of the buildings of the Tammsaare Museum at Vargamäe. The display features black-and-white photographs of the construction work carried out when the destroyed complex of buildings was restored. Thanks to this work, visitors can acquaint themselves with the conditions in which writer Anton Hansen Tammsaare grew up and see the place that inspired the novel ‘Truth and Justice’.
